One morning Morgan ran up to me and showed me her very loose tooth. I excitedly smiled and acknowledged her loose tooth but inside, my stomach churned a little. I've watched videos of parents helping their children pull out teeth and it’s always made me uneasy and I wondered if it would feel different when it came time for my own children to lose teeth. I figured there was a chance I wouldn't mind since I can handle my own children’s poop, vomit and boogies but, NOPE, I was still uneasy. Luckily I was quickly able to forget about it since we were taking part in our mad morning rush of getting dressed, making lunches and heading off to school and work.
Fast forward to two days later, after seeing how loose her tooth was, Daniel suggested we take pictures while she still had a full mouth of baby teeth. I'm sure glad he did since she lost her tooth later that day. Look at Charlotte's sweet face in the back of the picture below.
She's pointing to her loose tooth.
Last picture of Morgan with her full set of baby teeth. :)
Later that day, I was emptying out Morgan’s backpack after school and I pulled out a giant Ziploc bag. I thought it was odd and then I spotted a tiny little tooth in the bag. I held it up and exclaimed, “Morgan! You lost your tooth!” She apparently forgot to tell me when I picked her up. She was sitting there eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for dinner when she told me all about how it happened. I of course stopped everything I was doing to find out about this little milestone. She said she was sitting on the carpet at school and she felt a piece of trash in her mouth but that she thought to herself about how she knew she didn't put trash in her mouth so then she realized it was her tooth. Her words. J
She said she took her tooth to her teacher and told her what happened and her teacher said, “Class, please clap for Morgan because she just lost her very first tooth.” Morgan said all the children clapped and cheered for her.
I absolutely love that story! Here's a picture of her missing tooth.
So began our exciting evening of tooth fairy talk and preparations. Luckily, my mom had bought a tooth fairy kit for us a few years earlier. It was darling! Morgan and I loved it! It came with a little purse to put the tooth in, a book that explains how the tooth fairy came about and a little tooth light to help guide the tooth fairy.
I asked Morgan what the tooth fairy usually brings children and she said money and candy. And guess what? That’s exactly what she got!
Daniel had to work that night until 8 pm but I called him and told him the exciting news. He raced home after work to take part in our special evening. Morgan again told him all about her day and we settled in for the night and read her special book.
She was so excited! As I watched her place her little tooth containing purse under her pillow, I watched her face and really soaked in the moment. I took in the magic she was experiencing. Her precious pale face surrounded by dark long hair and dark eyelashes was so innocent and full of excitement. I felt honored to be experiencing that moment with her.
I also enjoyed watching Daniel prepare for his duties that night as I sneaked away to bed before him. I asked him a couple of questions but didn't need to because he was already prepared.
The next morning I gently nudged Morgan and told her to come eat breakfast. A few minutes later I heard, “Mommy! The tooth fairy came!” She proudly showed me her prizes which consisted of 3 little candies and some coins.
It’s easily these moments that bring me the greatest joy. It's been days since this event and she's still talking about the tooth fairy and the whole experience.
